- Description
A talk organised by the South Australian Centre for Australian Studies (Professional and Community Branches) in the Kingston Room at Old Parliament House to mark the Centenary of Women's Suffrage, 1894-1994. The audience is welcomed by Brian Samuels, Acting Director of OPH, and the speaker is introduced by Elizabeth Ho, Interim Convenor of the Professional Branch. Dr Magarey's talk examines the 1894 debates about women's suffrage through a discussion of the roles of three individuals: parliamentarian Ebenezer Ward, reformer Rose Birks and a young prostitute depicted in the 1907 book 'Darkest Adelaide'. Twenty minutes of questions and discussion follow the talk. Dr Leith MacGillivray proposes the vote of thanks.
