Description

oil, pencil on wood panel

A nurse in a white and grey uniform stands beside a stretcher bed screened by a red partition. A trooper patient, dressed in the standard royal-blue dress with a white shirt and a red neck tie issued to convalescents stands coyly, holding his hat in his hand. The low afternoon sun enters from the side of the balcony and makes a dappled pattern on the opposite wall. This work was painted between mid april and 25 May 1919 at Abbassia, during the six weeks the artist was in hospital with dysentery. The nurse is Mrs G.A. Aumuller.
