Summary
St Margaret's Hospital, known initially as St Margarets Maternity Home, was founded by Gertrude Abbott in 1893. Located in Elizabeth Street in Strawberry Hills it was founded 'to provide shelter and care for unmarried girls of the comparatively respectable class. In 1904 the hospital started an outpatients service, and in 1910 St Margaret's Hospital for Women moved to its final location on Bourke Street in Surry Hills. The work of the maternity hospital and midwifery training was continued from this base until 1998. At its peak, St Margaret's was the third largest maternity hospital in Sydney. The site was continually extended and rebuilt and specialist services and training courses added, including obstetric and gynaecology training of doctors.
St. Margaret's Private Hospital was opened in 1946 to assist in the funding of the public facilities. St. Margaret's Children's Hospital operated from 1967-1979 for the specialist care of infants and children, particularly the intensive care needs of neonates.
St. Margaret's Public Hospital closed in June 1993, followed by the closure of the Private Hosptial in June 1998. The site of the Children's Hospital, reused as the Gertrude Abbott Nursing Home, opened in 1982 and remains in operation

grew up in early 1950's at 166 albion street which had rear access to jesmond street where deliveries to hospital were made. there was a "short cut" from the convent/chapel next to hospital in Bourke Street to jesmond street. on many occasions was chased by one of the nuns who spotted me taking the short cut. Home free it the delivery gate was open but if not, involved climbing a six foot sandstone wall hastily to avoid the outstretched arm of the nun. Victory was followed by a five finger hand sign of scorn. Forty years later i had the pleasure of working for the St Joseph' nuns as a groundsman in Taree

Hi, I'm curious about your earlier responses here as I have been trying to access my hospital records from St. Margarets. I was born there in December '64, and when I recently called the Women's Hospital, Randwick about them the fellow very sniffily told me that "stuff that old has probably been destroyed". Not sure about the legality of such actions, not that such minor trifles were of much concern to many of the esteemed staff of St Megs. Anyway, I had been referred there from my initial enquiry to the Health Dept. Anyway, the thought that they and hopefully those of my mother and the woman who co-opted her role may well still be available is very exciting to me, thank you so much for your help. Pat

My Mum worked at St Margaret's in the 70's, she was a single mum and had to work on a Saturday in the admin office. I had to be there with her, as we were alone. I have very fond memories of the hospital. There was one Nun that used to take me around the hosp on her rounds. I also had my tonsils removed at the children's hospital. Ahh the wonderful memories.

I'm looking for a Doctor Dunston - or infact any staff present when my life was saved at 3 months old from hooping cough, which developed into pneumonia: it would have been 1977, around December. I have for years been told the story - I just wanted someone to convey to the people there that, well, that I've had a wonderful life.....I'm about to be married, I play in a band - I am many things; all because of the job those people did. I wanted to thank them, all of them. Dr. Dunston may no longer be with us and I feel sad that I've waited this long. Amyway I'll keep seaching. Please do contact me if anyone has any information or was indeed in attendance at that time - I'm on twitter: LukeUnicorn or contact me through my band http://thefreeradicals.co.uk/
Thankyou
