100 years of Australian Women at the Olympic Games.

Date: 23 July 2012

Did you know that this year’s London Olympics marks the 100th anniversary of Australian women competing in Olympic Games? Moreover, with increases in women’s participation and parity of sport disciplines, this year’s Olympic Games in London are heralded as the most gender equal in Olympic history and mark many significant achievements in terms of gender equality, even before the sport begins. (Although we do need to question Basketball Australia’s unequal treatment of our elite women basketball players!)

Nevertheless, Janice Crosswhite, President of the Australian Womensport and Recreation Association encourages us all ‘to appreciate and applaud the XXX Olympic Games as the most gender equal of all times as this is a significant achievement. We will now set our sights on breaking this gender equality record in four years’ time in Rio de Janeiro.’
