Eva Sommer

More information about Eva Sommer can be found in the AWAP register.

Women journalists, although limited in their number, were winning Walkley awards right from the start. Eva Sommer was an inaugural Walkley award winner in 1956 when she was a cadet on the Sydney Sun newspaper. A mystery stowaway had been travelling with other migrants on ships between Europe and Australia but had been unable to land because he could not remember his identity. Sommer, who spoke French and German, interviewed him and helped establish his identity, winning the best news story in the first year of the Walkley award.
