Lisa Gerrard was born in Melbourne on 24 April 1961. In 1981 she formed the world music duo Dead Can Dance with Brendan Perry. Dead Can Dance has released eight studio albums and is embarking on a global tour in 2013.

Gerrard also has a successful career in film, having scored and contributed to numerous film soundtracks, including Balibo (2009), Man on Fire (2004), Whale Rider (2002), Ali (2001), Black Hawk Down (2001), Gladiator (2000), The Insider (1999) and Heat (1995). Her collaboration with Hans Zimmer on the original music for Gladiator won the Golden Globe for Best Original Score for Motion Picture in 2001. Gladiator was also nominated for an Academy Award in Best Music, Original Score.

In 2009 Gerrard created her own record label, Gerrard Records, 'with the intent to empower and support unsigned, unrecognised artists the world over' (Comeau and Orr, 2009).
