Jane Bennett was born in Devonport, Tasmania. In 1997, she was the ABC Radio Australian Rural Woman of the Year and, in 2001, recipient of the Centenary Medal. In 2010, she was the Telstra Tasmanian Business Woman of the Year and in 2011 she won the Company Directors' Tasmanian Gold Medal awarded by the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Also in 2011, Jane Bennett joined the board of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation as a non-executive director. The following year, she was appointed to the board of the CSIRO.
