Summary
Dr Betty Phillips was appointed as Botanist at the Canberra Botanic Gardens in 1960 and was responsible for the major acceleration in the development of its herbarium, undertaking extensive fieldwork, collecting plants and seed throughout Australia.
Details
Betty Phillips graduated from the University of Sydney in 1937 and then undertook postgraduate studies mainly in Botany and was awarded a Master of Science in 1947. She was employed as a Research Assistant from 1940 in the Department of Botany at the University of Sydney and a Teaching Fellow from 1947, completing a Doctor of Philosophy degree at the University of Manchester in 1952. From 1952 to 1960 she worked as an ecologist with the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Authority before taking up her appointment as Botanist at the Canberra Botanic Gardens.
