At the time of the election (1973), Jean Braithwaite was reported as having worked in teachers' colleges and universities for the previous eleven years. Before that she taught in schools, both in NSW and abroad, and had taught literacy skills to all age groups in evening technical colleges. Jean is known to have obtained a MA and a Dip Ed. She was married, with two daughters.
