A member of the Australian Labor Party, (ALP) Joy Burch was elected to the Legislative Assembly for the Australian Capital Territory representing the electorate of Brindabella in October 2008. Before her appointment to Cabinet in November 2009, she was Government Whip and ALP Caucus secretary. She was re-elected at the election which was held on 20 October 2012. She currently holds the portfolios of Education and Training; Disability, Children and Young People; the Arts; Multicultural Affairs and Racing and Gaming.

Joy Burch’s ministerial portfolios have included Disability, Housing and Community Services; Young People; Multicultural Affairs; Ageing and Women. From May 2011 to November 2011 she was Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs and Minister for the Arts. She currently holds the portfolios of Community Services, Arts, Multicultural Affairs, Ageing, Women and Gaming and Racing.
