A member of the Australian Labor Party, Malarndirri McCarthy was elected to the Northern Territory Assembly as the Member for Arnhem in 2005. She was re-elected unopposed in 2008 and is currently a Minister with responsibility for Children and Families; Child Protection; Statehood; Women's Policy and Indigenous Policy. She is a Yanyuwa woman from Borroloola in the Northern Territory.
