Lowe, Annie

(1834 – 1910)
  • Nationality Australian
  • Born 1 January, 1834
  • Died 31 December, 1910
  • Occupation Suffragist

Annie Lowe, together with Henrietta Dugdale formed the Victorian Women’s Suffrage Society in 1884, the first such organisation to be established in Australia. She campaigned strongly, becoming the president of the United Council for Woman Suffrage, which included more than thirty societies. She lived to see women granted the franchise in Victoria in November 1908 and was given pride of place on the platform at the victory celebrations, which were held on 5 December 1908. Unfortunately she did not live to exercise her right to vote at the 1911 state election.
