Summary

The Office of the Women’s Adviser to the Premier was created in South Australia in 1976. The first Women’s Advisor was Deborah McCulloch. The Office had a broad ambit and was able to provide women’s services and to liaise with other government department on issues that affected women. The Office could comment upon ways to improve legislation and also undertake its own projects.

Details

The Women’s Advisory Unit was established by Deborah McCulloch in 1976 as a result of a comprehensive report on the Public Service in South Australia. Deborah was appointed on a three year contract and during this time she established the Women’s Information Switchboard. They undertook research on women’s issues and provided information to the Premier. The office was to co-ordinate activities relating to women in the state for the betterment of women’s status and well-being in South Australia. Some of the other women involved include Rosemary Wighton and Mary McLeod.
