Resources

Research in Repatriation files brings to life the lives of the women featured in War Widows of the ACT, from all social classes, as they forged new lives amidst sorrow. Their stories personify many women who have been ignored in the historic record.

For a more detailed overview of resources used to tell these women's stories see Records of soldiers and widows in the exhibition essay. In addition to the records held by the National Archives of Australia, and specific texts cited in the essays, we consulted births, deaths and marriages records in various Australian states; undertook research through the National Library of Australia's Trove for appearances in digitised newspapers and occasionally other Trove resources; used Ancestry, particularly for electoral rolls allowing tracking of residence, and sometimes for births, deaths and marriages; and used local histories, particularly for country districts.
